What is the difference between R410 and R32 gas?

Buying a new air conditioner is not an easy task, plus we have to decide on the refrigerants as well. Let’s talk about the popular refrigerant, R410A and the new kid on the block, R32. Refrigerants are the types of gasses used as cooling agents in air conditioners and other similar appliances. In this post, we are going to share the difference between r32 versus r410 and which is better between these two.

Here’s a quick look into the differences between r32 and r410:

  • r32 has the lowest global warming potential of 675.
  • r32 3 times lower than the global warming potential than the R-410A: 2088.
  • r32 is more energy efficient than R410 also and used is of the best inverter ACs.

R410 is invented in the 90s and found its way into the air conditioning units for residential and commercial sectors, replacing r22 and becoming the standard cooling agent for air conditioners worldwide. r410 is does not contain chlorine or bromine but only fluorine and this gas reduces power consumption, which drastically lower the environmental impact. r32 on the other hand, is an organic gas better known as diflioromethane, similar to r410. This gas is also found in other refrigerants, including r410. r32 is harmless to the ozone layer, less flammable and performs well in maintaining its pressure and heat transfer. r410 gas has a low temperature comparing to r32, producing lower coefficient performance and r32 has higher density than r410, which makes the r32 affects the climate even lesser than its estimated in the GWP (Global Warming Potentials). Both gases have different cooling capacity, which is why r410 uses larger pipes. R32 is much more efficient than r410 gas and has higher pressure ratio than r410.

From the technical point of view, r32 is indeed a more efficient and better cooling agent than the r410. It is not to say that it doesn’t have any shortcomings – one being the high discharge temperature r32 possesses. Due to that, it can break down the oil in the system that can cause appropriations. There are, fortunately, a way to limit the heat discharge and stabilise the appliances so it can function properly. r32 is a single-component gas and its more convenient to work with. It is also easier to recycle. With its low GWP (Global Working Potential) and high COP (Coefficient of Performance) make r32 a perfect refrigerant in this era.

Will a410 be obsolete and taken over by r32? Perhaps not now but it is most likely in the future to come. While some of us are worried about r32 devices being new and untried, but we assure you, Japan has been using this refrigerant for over 2 years with more than 10 million units installed.

In time, we will start to see more air conditioning units introduced which use R32 as this will allow the industry to transition smoothly to a situation where we still get the performance and efficiencies needed for our buildings, using refrigerants and equipment that delivers a much lower GWP overall.

How to Calculate Power Consumption of Air Conditioner with simple calculations?

Have you ever wondered how much electricity you use every day? Or how much energy your air conditioning consumes? In this post, we will be showing you how to calculate the energy consumption, identify and determine what the Energy Efficiency ‘star sticker’ Label on your Electrical Appliances are for. Let’s get to the calculation! Let’s take a lightbulb for example. A lightbulb’s energy is low, about 1 Watt.

The usage of electric: *1 Watt x 24 hours x 365 days = 8760 Watt per hour = 8.76 Kilo Watt per hour.

*1 kWhour is a unit for energy that is detected by the electric meter. The lowest price for one unit of electric is RM0.218. Back to our example, the usage of one light bulb is 8.76 kWhour x RM0.218 = RM1.91.

Now, you know the basic calculations for the usage of electricity. How about air conditioning? If an air conditioning with 1 horsepower uses approximately 1,200 Watts of electricity to operate, while an energy saving air conditioner uses 960 Watts of electricity. The calculation method for energy saving air conditioner is as follows:

For normal air conditioner = 1.2 kW x 365 days x 7 hours x RM0.25 (rate per kWj) = RM766.50

For energy saving air conditioner = 09.6 kW x 365 days x 7 hours x RM0.25 (rate per kWj) = RM613.20

These simple calculations showed that each year, we can save up to RM153.30 if we use energy saving air conditioner.

It is determined that all manufacturers and importers of products such as – television, refrigerator, domestic fan and air conditioner must attach the Energy Efficiency Label on all electrical products before it can be sold to the end users. The energy efficiency rating is determined by SIRIM as they will perform tests on the products. If the products passed the testing, Malaysian Energy Commission will give the ratings from 1 to 5.
